What We Lose When Kids Can't Afford to Play

What We Lose When Kids Can't Afford to Play

It's not just about the game. It's about everything the game teaches.

Let's talk about what $1,016 buys.

That's the average cost of youth sports per child, per sport, per year. Uniforms. Registration. Gear. Tournament fees. Gas money. The occasional overpriced concession stand hot dog.

For a lot of families, it's a stretch. For others, it's simply not possible.

And when a kid gets priced out of sports, they don't just lose a spot on the roster. They lose something bigger.

They lose the lessons.

Sports teach things that are hard to learn anywhere else. How to fail and get back up. How to work with people you didn't choose. How to push through when your legs are screaming and your lungs are burning. How to win with grace and lose without falling apart.

These aren't extras. They're foundational. And kids who don't get access to sports miss out on years of building that foundation.

They lose the belonging.

Being on a team is one of the first places kids learn what it feels like to be part of something bigger than themselves. The inside jokes. The bus rides. The pregame rituals. The people who have your back when things get hard.

For a kid who doesn't have a lot of stability at home, that locker room might be the safest place they've got.

They lose the mentors.

Coaches aren't just teaching plays. They're teaching life. A good coach is often the first adult outside a kid's family who believes in them, pushes them, and holds them accountable.

When a kid can't afford to play, they lose access to that relationship. And that loss compounds over time.

They lose the confidence.

There's a specific kind of confidence that comes from sports. The "I didn't think I could do that, but I did" kind. The kind that shows up later in job interviews, hard conversations, and moments that require courage.

Kids who don't get the chance to play often don't get the chance to build that muscle.

So what do we do about it?

This is why the Signature Foundation created the Back2Sport Fund.

The fund works with youth sports programs across the country to cover the costs that keep kids on the sidelines. Uniforms. Registration fees. Essential gear. The stuff that shouldn't decide whether a kid gets to play, but too often does.

The goal is ambitious: 10 million kids with access to sport by 2030.

But it starts with one kid at a time. One uniform. One registration fee. One season that changes everything.

Where your donation goes:

$100 Full uniform for one athlete

$200 Essential equipment package

$500 Full season scholarship for one athlete

$1,000 Outfit and equip an entire team

If you've ever watched your kid light up after a big win, or grow from a tough loss, you know what's at stake. Not every family can afford to give their kid that experience. But you can help make sure more of them do.
