Jessica Boone - Found Lacrosse by Accident and it Changed Her Life

Jessica Boone, National Coordinator of Women’s Sports at DVSport

Some athletes fall in love with their sport right away.
Jessica Boone had to be convinced to give lacrosse a try.

Growing up in a family full of girls—just her and her sister at home, and a tight-knit crew of girl cousins who felt like sisters—Jessica was a multisport athlete. Soccer, basketball, softball. Basketball was her first love. She was the point guard. The leader on the floor. And though she was only 5’4”, she played with grit, vision, and heart.

Lacrosse wasn’t even on her radar—until one day, a high school PE teacher named Karen Leitner handed her a stick and said, “Let me teach you. Just try it. You decide.”

That moment changed everything.

From Tie Games to Champions

Jessica’s high school team was in its first season—so new they didn’t win a single game.

“We were 0-18-1. And that one tie? It felt like winning a national championship.”

But Coach Karen believed in them. She poured her energy into building the team, teaching them the value of discipline, consistency, and teamwork.

“She turned athletes into lacrosse players. She taught us that losing could lead to victory if we stuck with it.”

By year two, they started winning.
By year three, they were league champs.

Jessica took pride in wearing that high school jersey—not for what it represented on the scoreboard, but for what it taught her about effort, identity, and community.

Four Years at UAlbany - and a Lifetime of Lessons

Jessica earned a scholarship to play Division I lacrosse at the University at Albany.

“I wanted to play basketball, but I was 5’4”. Lacrosse was new, exciting, and gave me a chance to keep competing.”

She played all four years and found herself surrounded by strong, supportive women who shaped her future. To this day, she’s in a group chat with 21 of her teammates.

“None of our memories are about wins or losses. They’re about what we did for each other.”

When her playing days ended, she wasn’t ready to let go. She took a graduate assistant coaching position at Manhattan College—while juggling four jobs: assistant coach, waitressing at two different restaurants, monitoring the weight room, and interning at St. Raymond’s School—all so she could stay close to the sport.

She went on to become head coach at Randolph-Macon, then Bucknell University, where she became the youngest D1 head coach in the country at just 26 years old.

But for Jessica, coaching wasn't just about recruiting talent.

"I wasn't building rosters - I was building people. And as much as I was teaching my players, I was learning from them too"

Empowering the Next Generation

Today, Jessica works in sports tech as the National Coordinator for Women’s Sports at DVSport, where she’s focused on making sure women have representation, mentorship, and visibility in an industry that often overlooks them.

“Women want to learn from someone who’s been where they are. That’s what I’m here for.”

She still volunteers and coaches high school girls lacrosse in her free time—just like Coach Karen did for her.

Because the women who showed up for her? She’s becoming that woman for someone else.
