Mike Rutty, Team Manager | U17 Juan De Fuca Whalers (Victoria, BC)
Mike Rutty didn’t plan to be a team manager.
He just wanted to support his son and stay involved in the sport he grew up around.
But when the U17 Juan De Fuca Whalers needed leadership, he stepped up.
Because when you believe in the talent on the field, you do whatever it takes to help them be seen.
Based in Victoria, British Columbia, the Whalers are a competitive, high-level program filled with serious talent. Mike’s goal? Get these players the exposure they deserve—especially when the traditional pipeline doesn’t include them.
“Some of these kids are 100% D1 material. But flying to showcases, paying for travel, gear—it adds up. Most families out here just can’t afford it.”
So Mike and the coaching staff are finding new ways to get noticed.
They’ve turned to content—reels, highlights, and Instagram clips that have racked up 50,000+ views and counting. It’s become one of the only affordable tools they have to help their players be seen by college coaches south of the border.
“We don’t have the resources most U.S. clubs have. But we have the talent. We just need people to see it.”
Breaking Barriers in Goal
Among the Whalers’ starters is a standout goaltender who’s breaking more than just saves—she’s the only female on the team.
Playing at this level, against boys, and holding her own in net is no small feat. It’s a testament to her skill, resilience, and confidence—and she’s not just keeping up. She’s setting the standard.
“She’s fearless in net. And she’s earned every bit of respect from this team and every opponent we’ve faced.”
A Program with Purpose
The Whalers aren’t new. They’ve been part of the Victoria lacrosse community for years.
But the mission is stronger than ever.
They play box lacrosse all summer, develop year-round, and are pushing hard to give their athletes a shot at the next level—on and off the field.
“These kids just need a shot. If we can help even one get seen—get recruited—it’s worth it.”
Mike’s story is one many coaches and parents can relate to:
You don’t always sign up to lead.
But when the team needs you, you show up.
And when the game has given your family so much—you do everything you can to give it right back.
