A coach is perhaps the most influential person in an athletes world. Whether it is at the beginner youth level or the extreme professional level, a coach is not only someone there to instruct and teach, but also to set an example for the kind of person that athlete should strive to be.
Some of the best coaches around, teach with a philosophy in line with Benjamin Franklin’s famous words, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”.
When a player steps on that field, they are expected to give 110% in return for 110% from their coaches. They are there to learn and grow as athletes from the people who have the ability to teach that. Not only are they relying on your expertise in that sport on the game field, but also how to grow in their individual skills. With teams of great numbers, it’s easy to stray from the true purpose and focus on winning those golds, but that’s not what your players need.
Winning isn’t everything, but it is something. And in order to achieve that greatness, you need more than one skilled player or a couple of good stick skills. So how do we increase our chances of winning? We increase the progression of our team.
